What’s the Difference Between Asphalt and Blacktop?
Many people use the words asphalt and blacktop to mean the same thing.
At Elgin Sealcoating & Paving Works, we want to help you set the record straight so that you have no confusion when it comes to ordering asphalt repair or replacement surfaces.
While asphalt and blacktop are similar, they do have some major differences. Read below for a breakdown of Asphalt vs. Blacktop...
First, the use is the main difference.
You’ll find asphalt on your very high traffic areas, such as on roadways and major highways. It has a higher concentration of bitumen (dark, black material that works as the glue to hold the stone together) versus what you’d find in blacktop. Asphalt helps keep the noise level of traffic down and can withstand higher levels of traffic.
We use blacktop on lower traffic areas, such as driveways, cul de sacs, and private entryways. These areas don’t have as much traffic and don’t need the strength of asphalt. Blacktop has a higher amount of stone versus bitumen. While still sturdy, it’s meant for areas with lower levels of traffic that you would find on driveways and private roadways.
Yes, many residents prefer asphalt driveways over concrete because they are easier to maintain and can handle a lot of use. For example, an asphalt or blacktop driveway can be resealed every year to prevent potholes and cracks in the first place, avoiding the need for excessive repairs. If you have a high traffic area or need a more durable surface than a blacktop driveway provides, talk to our paving contractors about your options.
If you have a blacktop driveway and are happy with it as a medium, we will gladly maintain it for you!
